Supplementing Your Diet
Many people ask me, “Are supplements really needed and aren’t supplements all the same”. Let me start off by saying in some cases supplements really are needed and, No, not all supplements are created equally.
So, when are supplements needed? This really depends on your specific sex, age, medical history, and current health. Supplements are named “Supplements” for that reason. They supplement nutrition in your life that you are not actively attaining in your everyday diet and bodily function. It is then necessary to understand what your diet is, how efficiently your body is functioning, and what your current health levels are. This is a proactive choice that is first required before moving ahead in this article.
Hormones, vitamins, and minerals are the active stimulus for proper human function. With this known, we can then prepare for days, weeks, months, even years ahead. Osteoporosis prevention, weight loss, pregnancy, a huge hockey season, or even the common ambition of continued health as we age can be achieved if we know our goals.
What is the difference between a good quality supplement and an isle 7 multivitamin? A lot. If the purpose of a supplement is to provide additional health to our body, we better make sure it does just that. As with a brand of cereal that may advertise “lowers cholesterol”, or “guaranteed whole grains”, one must be vigilant enough to understand what quality that statement holds. Educate yourself in being able to read its ingredients, its manufacturing protocols and the accurately concentrated amounts of what your specific body requires.
Natural versus Synthesized is an important factor in your supplement decision. Our body has the ability to break down and utilize the nutrition we decide to put in it. It has peak performance when that nutrition is easiest broken down when it is natural. Synthesized products can be just as effective, but many times may have other unwanted side effects on the body and cannot be broken down completely as readily.
